News Cafe Billboards

Let us know what you think of the new News Cafe Billboard and in-store campaign for 2009! We have changed them up a bit and added the Carnival Board, my personal favourite.

Are there any adventurous, intelligent and humourous people left in the world? Or are there just jaded and bitter creatives that wish they had a voice that would allow them to sing instead of croak?

I think those billboards are awesome. I like the HDR images especially. I’ve always been a fan and it’s nice to see how you’ve used them in context.

I am an especially large fan of the first billboard design, though I am not quite sure about the French Horn in the moon. I similarly like the third design though the 50 Cent looking wannabe gangster is a little over the top. Nice work overall.

Thanks Shane. That’s just it though, News Cafe can be a little over the top in terms of its clientelle and its delivery sometimes. So yes we went very OTT with the beach one to illustrate the flamboyant side of the brand. The models are all airbrushed to within an inch of their lives to look almost a little “plastic”. It is very tongue in cheek and shows how News Cafe as a brand, can laugh at itself and is not afraid to ahve a bit of fun…

It’s been a while since I last went to a News Cafe, but when I did it appeared that the brand was slipping. The branch in Edward Street, Western Cape was horrible and the management seemed arrogant and undeservedly snooty. I think they closed down.

The Tableview branch is great though, with nice views and a modern decor. Hopefully a sign of the times.

About the billboards, I think they look brilliant. About them being OTT, thats understandable. I just hope for their sake, they can maintain their in-store service and decor levels to the degree that your designs depict.

Leigh, they look great on the billboards but do loose a little because of the size.

i like the concept, but the models are too styled. (are they professional?) The concept you were going for is great.

Hi thanks for your comment. Yes the models are professionals and they are meant to look over styled as it is part of the tongue in cheek attitude that the concept embraces. In other words, News Cafe does not itself too seriously and can poke fun at itself. It is all about overstyling and excess. Hope this makes sense for you?

    Great Vibe!
Well done to you and your team!! I like 12.06 and 9pm best, but then I’ve always been a night owl! Hope it delivers great results for you and for News Cafe. V:)

Thanks V! They are different and quite elaborate but that what makes them special in my mind. Because these boards are on the M1 motorway where traffic is at a standstill morning and evening, there is the opportunity to study them. The 18m boards work exceptionally well are are really impactful. I am sure they will create some industry noise and hopefully ignite some renewed interest in the brand!

I may be a bit biased, but I think this campaign encompasses what the vibe is about. It is stylish, sexy, fun, cheeky and sophisticated. Well done Leigh, I love them.

    WoW!!!
It is very obvious that designs come easy once you identify the soul of the brand.

    Dear Leigh

Really love the creative concept, as well as the execution of your agency’s News Cafe billboards! On stretches of grey concrete, you eye can’t help pick out the vibrant colour and overall intended message of the outdoor campaign. WELL DONE and keep up the great work!
